Haleakalā National Park: Spanning 30,000 acres from the coast to its 10,023-foot summit, this park has a larger concentration of endangered species than any other national park and features the dormant volcano, Haleakalā, which hasn’t erupted for 400 to 600 years. Visitors can explore the otherworldly summit and watch the sunrise, or visit the Kīpahulu District on the east side of the island where waterfalls can be seen.
ʻĪao Valley State Monument: Home to the iconic ʻĪao Needle, this is the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai, where the forces of King Kamehameha I conquered the Maui army. The 4,000-acre state park features ʻĪao Needle, a landform that rises 1,200 feet from the valley floor. In 1790, Kamehameha the Great’s army defeated Maui forces here, in the Battle of Kepaniwai (the water dam), named after the way fallen warriors blocked the river. ʻĪao Valley State Monument will be closed until January 15, 2023 for renovations.
Eco-Tourism: Take a drive to Upcountry Maui and stroll among fields of sweet lavender and vibrant protea in Kula. Or walk back in time through gardens of indigenous plants at the Kula Botanical Garden. Continue to the 30,000-foot summit of Haleakalā and you just might meet our state bird, the endangered nēnē (Hawaiian goose), or stumble across a Haleakalā silversword, a rare and beautiful succulent that shimmers in the early light.
Golfing: Beauty all around! Maui has two distinct areas where the bulk of accommodations and golf resorts are situated. West Maui, centered around the historic whaling village of Lāhainā, offers 36 holes at both the Kāʻanapali Beach Resort and Kapalua Resort. South Maui is home to Wailea Golf Club, and you’ll find four other courses between Wailuku and Pukalani.
